Sangamon County, Illinois – Police received a call for a plane crash around 3:05 p.m. According to initial reports, the plane crashed to the east of 3184 White Timer Rd., and the Rochester Police Department was the first agency who arrived to the crash.
According to Sangamon County Sheriff, Jack Campbell, the plane was headed for Springfield Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport. The tower reported that the plane was having trouble approaching due to weather and the planes instruments. When the plane tried to make a circle around Springfield in an attempt to approach the airport again, that’s when the airport control tower lost contact with the plane.
The FAA was also on scene, and will be turning it over to the NTSB, according to Sheriff Campbell.
On board the plane, were three individuals and a dog who were killed in the plane crash.
Former Springfield Mayor, Frank Edwards, Sangamon County Coroner, Cinda Edwards, their dog, Lily Edwards and John Evans of Glenarm, Illinois, were the individuals on board the twin-engine Piper Aerostar when it crashed, according to a Springfield Leaks source.
According to FlightAware, the plane crashed at 101 miles per hour. The tail number of the plane is N6071R. According to the FAA Registry, the plane is registered to LKJ PROPERTIES LLC in Springfield, Illinois.

The Sheriff’s Office is also asking the public to stay away from the crash scene and if you see or heard anything, to contact the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office at (217) 753-6666.
