Springfield, Illinois – In a letter sent out to families with children in Springfield School District 186, Superintendent, Jennifer Gill, addressed what measures the School District is taking to protect students from the Coronavirus.

The letter said the following, “Keeping our students and staff healthy and safe is our top priority, so we want to share how we are planning as we monitor developments related to coronavirus. We are closely following the news, along with state and local public health updates, and we are reassured that at this time that the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is stating that the risk remains low for Illinois residents.

Currently, IDPH recommends schools hold classes and events as usual, and follow routine cleaning and disinfecting procedures. We will continue to look to the guidance of IDPH, and will follow their recommendations to the fullest extent.

District 186 is continuing with our preventative efforts that are routine during cold and flu season. All custodians have been directed to utilize a disinfectant, which is sprayed on desk tops, handrails, door knobs and all frequently touched surfaces. We are calling on our custodians to complete this practice on a nightly basis for all classrooms and throughout the day as they walk the buildings.

We are also echoing the following recommendations from IDPH that apply during cold and flu season:

● Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
● Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
● Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
● Stay home when you are sick.
● Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
● Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

We will continue to closely monitor recommendations regarding coronavirus and will update you as soon as there are any significant changes in recommendations for schools. Thank you for your support in helping to keep our school community healthy.”
