
Springfield, Illinois – Yesterday, July 14, around 12:05 a.m., a Springfield Police Officer was in the 1400 block of Pennsylvania Ave., on a traffic stop. During the traffic stop, the officer noticed a man down and requested an ambulance to the scene.

Neighbors in the area tell us that they heard arguing prior to police officer arriving to the scene.

According to several sources, the man was transported to HSHS St. John’s Hospital and pronounced deceased in the Emergency Room. We have identified the man as Ray A. Lofton.
According to a law-enforcement source close to Springfield Leaks, Lofton was stabbed at the scene. Although, currently no one has been arrested at this time, law enforcement is currently waiting on the official autopsy results to determine the official cause of death.
Officers who were at the scene tells us that Lofton was unresponsive and CPR was performed. Although life saving measures were performed, Sangamon County Coroner, Jim Allmon, confirmed that Lofton was pronounced deceased at 12:29 a.m. at HSHS St. John’s Hospital Emergency Room.
At this time, Springfield Police and the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office is investigating the official cause of death.
A source has confirmed that based off of the results of the pending autopsy, the death might be ruled as a homicide.
